Etiquette of Drinking ZamZam According to Islamic Tradition
Drinking Zamzam water is a highly respected tradition in Islam, and there are certain etiquettes that Muslims follow when drinking the water. These etiquettes are based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who emphasized the importance of showing respect and gratitude when consuming the blessed water.
Begin with Bismillah
One of the most important etiquettes of drinking Zamzam water is to begin by saying "Bismillah" which means "in the name of Allah". This is a way of acknowledging that the water is a gift from Allah ﷻ and thanking Him for it. After saying "Bismillah", Muslims usually recite a prayer, such as "Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an wa rizqan wasi'an wa shifa'an min kulli daa'in" which means "O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, provision that is vast, and healing from every disease."
Face the Qiblah
Another recommended etiquette is to drink the water while standing, facing the Qiblah. While this is not fully authenticated as a Prophetic Sunnah (tradition), we can do this as a mark of respect especially when making a supplication afterwards.
It is also recommended to drink the water in three sips, pausing to take a breath in between each sip. This is based on a saying of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who advised us drink the water in this manner, saying: "The best water on the face of the earth is the water of Zamzam. In it, there is food for the hungry and healing for the sick."
Seeking Benefits from Allah
Additionally, as Muslims we believe that the Zamzam water has certain blessings and benefits, and therefore it is recommended to drink it with the intention of seeking its blessings and benefits. It is also recommended to make Du’aa, or supplication, after drinking the water, asking for any particular blessings or benefits that one may need in their life.
These etiquettes are based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, and they emphasize the importance of showing respect and gratitude towards the blessings of Allah ﷻ. As the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once said, "The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for." (Ibn Majah)
Therefore, as Muslims we believe that drinking Zamzam water with the proper etiquette and intention can bring many blessings and benefits in this life and the hereafter.
WAHY’s ZamZam Water
Given the great significance of ZamZam water for Muslims across the world, we are careful to ensure WAHY London’s ZamZam is sourced from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the water traceable to the well of ZamZam. The ZamZam water is then carefully bottled in our facilities in the United Kingdom and is not mixed nor contaminated with any other sources of water. Thus, resulting in the unique and pristine taste that we have all come to know.
